Rip Curl supports conservation groups, beach communities, and other initiatives that protect our oceans and waterways. From coastal revegetation to the wellbeing of remote surfing communities, we strive to make a meaningful impact through dedicated projects and events. These efforts reflect our deep connection and commitment to preserving the environments where we operate, surf, and live.

Rip Curl Planet Day began in 2000 in Torquay, Australia, when our Crew teamed up with local volunteers to support the important environmental conservation work being done along our coastlines.
Since then, Planet Day has expanded to include our teams in Brazil, France, Indonesia, and the USA, enabling even more Crew to live out Rip Curl’s core value of ‘Community and Environment.’
Each year, our Crew across the globe unite in their regions for a day of giving back. Activities include tree planting, weed removal, rubbish clean-ups, protecting vulnerable areas, and implementing water-saving strategies to support the long-term health of coastal ecosystems, public beaches, and parklands.
In 2025, Rip Curl will proudly celebrate 25 years of Rip Curl Planet Day.

Delivered in partnership with the US Surfrider Foundation, the Coastal Defender Tour brings volunteers together for beach cleanups along iconic coastlines, promoting environmental stewardship and community engagement.
More than cleanups, the tour builds community through aligning with events that often include live music and local food, fostering connection, awareness, and a shared commitment to protecting our oceans. These events highlight the importance of collective action in preserving our natural environment.

We recognise the vital role that mangrove ecosystems play in protecting coastlines and maintaining biodiversity, which is why we work with key partners on restoration projects. In partnership with organisations such as Plastic Bank, Rip Curl Indonesia conducts clean-ups in places like Bali, helping combat plastic pollution while restoring critical mangrove forests.
Another focus area is coral reef conservation. Together in partnership with Ocean Gardener, Rip Curl Indonesia has established coral nurseries in Sanur, Bali, to educate the community and visitors about the importance of these reefs. This initiative actively supports the restoration of degraded reef areas, helping to maintain marine biodiversity.

The Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang is more than just a world-class surfing event; it’s also a platform for environmental conservation and community engagement.
In partnership with Plastic Free Uluwatu and 4Ocean, Rip Curl takes important steps to address plastic pollution and promote sustainable waste management in Bali’s Pecatu Village. The cleanup brings together competitors, event staff, and local volunteers to remove plastic waste from Padang Padang Beach and the surrounding valleys. These efforts help protect the fragile marine ecosystem while encouraging environmental responsibility within the local surfing community.
Beyond sustainability, the Rip Curl Cup also celebrates Balinese culture, with the event’s opening ceremony featuring traditional performances, such as the Kecak Dance, reinforcing a deep connection to the region’s rich heritage.

Across our regions, we’re working to increase female representation in the lineup and make surfing more accessible to women. In Indonesia, our ‘Girls Go Surfing Days’ welcome women of all skill levels to share waves and engage in environmental education. Across Europe, we partner with organisations like Women and Waves UK, Bande de Surfeuses, and Surf Insertion to boost participation and improve access to the ocean. In Australia, our monthly ‘Sip N Surf’ events with URBNSURF offer women the chance to surf the wavepool in a fun, supportive environment.

Rip Curl partners with organisations that use surfing to drive social good. In Europe, we work with Surf Insertion and Bande de Surfeuses to offer surf lessons to young people from disadvantaged backgrounds. We also partner with Nomad’s Surfing, who support vulnerable communities through surf camps and workshops. Together, we’ve raised environmental awareness through Planet Day initiatives and recycled event banners into board bags. Paddle Paddle Surf Project is another nonprofit French organisation dedicated to promoting a more inclusive, accessible, and environmentally responsible surfing community. Rip Curl and Paddle Paddle collaborate on wetsuit repair workshops to extend wetsuit life.
