25 Years of Rip Curl Planet Day

In 2000, our Torquay Head Office Crew teamed up with local volunteers to support vital environmental conservation work being done along the coastlines where we live, work, and surf.

This quickly became an annual tradition known as ‘Planet Day’, an important day on the Rip Curl calendar.

Planet Day soon expanded beyond Australia to include our teams in Brazil, France, Indonesia, Thailand, and North America, becoming a truly global event.

Each year, teams unite for a day of giving back: planting trees, removing weeds, cleaning up rubbish, and taking action to support the long-term health of our coastal ecosystems, beaches, and parklands.

In 2025, we proudly celebrated 25 years of Planet Day.

“It was really special to be part of a tradition so central to Rip Curl’s DNA,” said Ashley Reade, Rip Curl’s Chief Executive Officer. “Getting outside with the Crew to give back to our coastline, while knowing our counterparts around the world were doing the same, was amazing. When you add it all together, you see that what feels like a small effort can make a big difference.”

Here’s how Planet Day 2025 took shape across the regions:

  • In Australia, teams worked alongside local environmental groups to remove invasive weeds, remove trash from waterways via paddleboards, and plant over 1200 native trees.
  • Our North America. team partnered with The Surfrider Foundation to conduct a beach clean-up at Trestles, California, battling the mud and the rain to collect 36 kilograms of trash. The waste collected consisted of hundreds of small yet highly detrimental pieces of plastic that could have polluted the marine environment for decades, if not generations.
  • Onsmooth, our wetsuit factory in Thailand, held a tree planting event with approximately 200 participants planting around 4,000 trees.
  • In Indonesia, as part of the prestigious Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang, the team partnered with Sungai Watch to collect over 837 kilograms of waste from a river in Gianyar, Bali.

Community and Environment have been at the heart of Rip Curl since we were founded in 1969. Since then, we have made meaningful progress on this journey, including becoming a Certified B Corporation (B Corp) in 2023, joining a global community of businesses that meet high standards of social and environmental impact.

Looking ahead to 2026, we remain committed to our ambitious sustainability goals, and you’ll once again find us outdoors, proudly continuing the tradition of Rip Curl Planet Day.
