Callum Robson (Evans Head, NSW) claimed victory in the prestigious Rip Curl GromSearch presented by Flight Centre championship in the 16 and Under boys division with a dominate display of modern surfing. Robson started proceedings with a 7.5 point (out of a possible 10 points) ride after a massive two turn combo out the back which he then linked to a bonus inside section. This wave was integral in Robson taking home the prestigious Rip Curl GromSearch presented by Flight Centre championship and maiden competition win.
“It was really tough out there today but I did manage to find a few nice corners to hit and get some points,” Robson said. “I had a second place finish at one of the earlier GromSearch event so I am really happy to walk away with a win in this one and get the chance to head down to the national final.”
Kirra-Belle Olsson (Copacabana, NSW) dominated her 16 & Under Girls final where she secured a two wave combined heat total of 16.17 points (out of a possible 20 points) to take the win. Olsson’s amazing display of rail to rail surfing relegated Sasha Baker (Mudjimba, Qld), Amber Dods (Sunrise Beach, Qld) and Piper Harrison (Coolangatta, Qld) respectively into the minor places.
It was Finn Hill (Avoca Beach, NSW) who took top honors in the hotly contested 14 and Under Boys competition. Hill was left to chase down an early lead by George Pittar (North Manly, NSW) who wasted no time kick starting a final that left judges and spectators stunned by the level of talent displayed throughout. Hill has put himself one step closer to the national final due to be held early next year and the proud owner of the Rip Curl GromSearch presented by Flight Centre trophy.
All of this action will continue tomorrow with the finals program for the micro grom 12 and Under Boys, 12 and Under Girls and 14 and Under Girls.
Since its inception in 1999, the Rip Curl GromSearch has grown into the largest grom event series in the world. The series provides a crucial stepping-stone in the development of junior surfers right across the planet with competitors of the event on day one setting the benchmark and living up to the series name.
After prior events in Victoria, New South Wales, Western Australia and South Australia, it’s the last chance for competitors of this year’s series to capitalize on increasing their ratings points where the best two finishing results from each event are counted.
Surfers receive points for their results in each event, which then count towards a National GromSearch ratings system, allowing surfers from around Australia to compare their results with contemporaries. Leaders on the National Ratings will then qualify for the last event of the series, the Rip Curl GromSearch National Final, to be held at North Narrabeen, NSW on January 16-18, 2017.
